Is There Such a Thing as a Spiritual Overload?
Is there such a thing as a spiritual overload? Over the last fews years I’ve been on a journey of self discovery and on this journey I’ve been digging deep within myself but also experimenting with many different spiritual practices. I have tried everything I could get my hands on, literally… everything. But have I taken on too much? Have I been so curious I can’t seem to obtain any information? Have I gone into an information/spiritual overload…? Why yes, yes I think I have.
Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a curiosity for new things, but I do think moderation is required. In today’s world our brains are taking in hundreds of thousands of pieces of data daily and our brains can’t analyse or obtain it all and we end up experiencing brain fog. This is where you feel more confused than knowledgable about the subject you are learning about. And I’ve realised I am experiencing this first hand at the moment.
But what happens when you are curious about everything and can’t decide where to start? I feel you!!!!! I love how Emma Howarth, author of A Year of Mystical Thinking did it. She decided to try a new spiritual practice each month and only concentrate on that one thing the whole time and then she moved on to the next thing. She found that after starting this challenge the universe would naturally guide her on to the next topic meant for her. This allowed her to focus and give her time to find out what really resonated with her.
It’s important to note that not every book, spiritual practice or ritual will resonate you. You have to give yourself that time and space to figure this out. It’s quite likely, that if you’re like me and tend to dive in to anything head first, you’ll come out the other side tired, frustrated and having no idea what just happened. So what is the solution to a spiritual overload, how can I personally continue to learn in a calm and collective way?
I think taking inspiration from Emma is a good idea. Slow and steady. Pick one thing you feel drawn to first and give yourself a timeframe and if you feel it resonates with you then keep going with it, if not, then move on. Here’s the thing, it’s in your control, you can decide what’s right for you. As for me, I’m gonna take a bit of a break and only incorporate a few things into my daily life: meditation, exercise, journalling and experiencing joy in the everyday mundane. That’s already a lot!
So I encourage those of you on your spiritual journey, take it nice and steady and remember this is a life journey not a race.
Happy unoverloading yourself!
