Episode 09: Milena Iacovelli

What is art therapy and how can it help you? Art therapy is a discipline that incorporates creative methods of expression through many forms of visual art media. In the world of therapy it combines psychotherapy and art to help one express their feelings. Art therapy is a relatively new disciple and is gaining more and more popularity. Art therapy can be used to help people improve cognitive and sensory motor function, self-esteem, self awareness, emotional resilience and also aide in resolving conflicts and reduce distress. Where one may not feel comfortable expressing their feelings vocally, art therapy asks one to externalise those feelings through art.

In this week’s episode I speak with Corporate Art Therapist and Well-being Coach, Milena Iacovelli. We discuss how she found her way to art theory, why she’s chosen to work with corporations on implementing more mental health awareness in the work place and how art therapy can be so beneficial to you and help you discover your inner child and your inner self.

Before our interview, she invited me to partake in one of her online art therapy group sessions. I had never experienced a session before and found the idea of it very intriguing. During the session, I was surprised by what my drawing externalised. Some of the drawings made complete sense to me and others were clearly feeling I needed to bring forth to evaluate deeper.

Art in general is an express of ones soul, so I can see how an art therapy session could expose ones deep rooted feelings.

I really enjoyed this chat with Milena and learned so much from her.
